Foundation Wheelchair Skills Programme Overview

The Foundation Wheelchair Skills Programme combines theoretical learning with hands-on experience to develop participants' understanding of active wheelchair use, provision and practical wheelchair skills.

Through discussion, demonstration, practical experience and real-world scenarios, participants explore how wheelchair mobility can support greater confidence, independence and participation, while developing knowledge and skills they can apply within their own professional practice.

What the Programme Covers

Wheelchair Use & Participation

Explore the importance of active wheelchair use and how it can support independence, confidence, autonomy, health, social inclusion and participation.

Understanding the Wheelchair User

Consider physical, cognitive, motivational and environmental factors that can influence active wheelchair use and the development of independent mobility.

Wheelchair Provision, Configuration & Maintenance

Develop an understanding of active wheelchair provision, including wheelchair options, measurements, positioning and centre of gravity, alongside practical considerations for wheelchair setup, maintenance and ongoing performance.

Practical Wheelchair Skills

Practise fundamental wheelchair skills including propulsion, stopping, turning, balance, reaching, navigating different surfaces and obstacles, managing everyday barriers and introducing wheelie skills.

Transfers

Explore practical approaches to transfers between wheelchairs and other surfaces, including considerations around technique, safety, transfer aids and supporting greater independence.

Real-World Problem Solving

Apply learning through discussion and practical scenarios, exploring everyday challenges wheelchair users may encounter and developing approaches that support mobility, independence and participation.
